Albert Tarantola (1949-2009) was a visionary geophysicist who made seminal contributions to Inverse Problem Theory. He was the first to use inversion methods to image the Earth's interior using seismic waveforms.

211172 Tarantola (2002 JX10) is a main belt asteroid discovered in May 2, 2002 in Needville TX by Joe Dellinger and Paul Sava. The asteroid has a period of 3.7 years, a semi-major axis of 2.39AU, eccentricity of 0.21, and inclination of 0.9 degrees from the ecliptic.
